Summer break has arrived! The sound of busy students has been exchanged with the sound of heavy equipment preparing the grounds in the center of campus for the incoming fall class.

Commencement weekend was a huge success filled with family, laughter, and even a few tears. If you were unable to attend, you can view the full Commencement Ceremony video on our website.

Congratulations Class of 2014!

Every year, Commencement at Thomas is a very exciting time for students, their families, faculty, and staff alike. This year was a mix of strong messages, excitement for the future, and a few surprises.

198 graduates participated in the 2014 Commencement.

The Class of 2014, made up of 198 graduates, took their seats in front of over 2,500 family members and friends. Messages from class speakers Scarlett Stevens and Javier Abascal Carrasco brought about some laughter and some insight as to why they chose Thomas. Javier told students to remember, "We have been dealt a very good hand here at Thomas."

Class speakers Javier Abascal Carrasco and Scarlett Stevens

met Commencement speaker Senator Susan Collins.

This year's Commencement speaker and Honorary Degree recipient Senator Susan Collins encouraged the graduates to stay in Maine. "Whether you grew up in Maine or came here from another state or internationally, Maine needs what you have to offer," she said. "The values of Maine are hard work, determination, and community, and those are also the values of Thomas College and of this class."

After the diplomas were handed out and the ceremony came to a close, President Lachance asked graduating student John Little to join her on stage. He started with a short speech about friendship and love at Thomas - and ended the day by proposing to his girlfriend Sarah Card. Click here to see her response!

Alumni Tour New Construction

On May 7, alumni visited campus for a special Alumni After Hours that included a construction tour of the new Harold Alfond Academic Center. Graduates from years past also welcomed their newest incoming members: the Class of 2014.

The Dog Pound Cafe and Pub was filled with alums and

graduating students for the May 7 Alumni After Hours.

More than 50 Thomas alums first gathered in the Dog Pound Café and Pub for refreshments and drinks, reconnecting, or in some cases, meeting for the first time. Many attended in anticipation of seeing the new building first-hand, before it opens in just a few short months.

Said alums Danielle (Bolduc) Marquis '00, who attended with her husband Matt '00, "We came back to Thomas recently but wanted to return to campus because it's just so fun to see Thomas growing like this."

Thomas alums Danielle & Matt Marquis returned to tour the

Harold Alfond Academic Center.

The groups toured the Alfond Academic Center throughout the evening, starting in the new library space and visiting classrooms, the café, financial center, board room, and faculty offices.

(L to R) Alumni Doug and Colleen (Payne) Eugley and Sheila (Vashon) and Scott Nielsen say "Cheers!" to the growth on

campus at Thomas

"This sure isn't the Thomas we remember!" laughed Doug Eugley '83, who was joined by his wife Colleen (Payne) '83 and friends Scott '83 and Sheila (Vashon) Nielsen '86, M.B.A. '91. "Seriously, though, it is great to see Thomas come this far."

The Alfond Academic Center will open for students in the fall, with a dedication event and more tours slated for mid-October. Stay tuned for more information!

In the meantime, to make a donation to this project or to this year's Thomas Fund, our annual fundraising effort that supports student scholarships, faculty development, and athletic and co-curricular activities, please visit us at www.thomas.edu/give. Alumni gifts received before June 30 will boost alumni participation at Thomas, and your dollars will be doubled by the Harold Alfond Foundation! Thank you.

Each year during Homecoming & Family Weekend, Thomas College holds its Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner and ceremony to welcome new members and recognize prior inductees.
Submit your nomination online by June 1 to be considered for induction this fall.

"For me, it's validation of the hard work and long hours I put in on and off the field. I pushed myself daily in the classroom as well as on the field to be the best me I could be. Having others recognize my hard work and dedication I had to softball, is just a symbol for me that good things don't go unnoticed!"

- Jasmine Carey '05, inducted 2013.
