The Thomas family celebrated Commencement on May 11 in the Alfond Athletic Center's Allen & Dianne Ryan Field House. Nearly 175 students graduated with more than 2,000 guests in attendance. Incredibly that is an average of more than ten family members and friends for each graduate. Indeed, the Class of 2013 is the largest in Thomas's history.

Just weeks later, Thomas celebrated again, this time at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy where students Krista Lee '13 and Lauren Kief '13 graduated from the program, along with many others. Read more about these terrific events below.

And just around the corner: the Class of 2017 will be welcomed for Summer Orientation on June 15!

Until next month...

119th Commencement

On May 11, Thomas College celebrated its 119th Commencement by graduating nearly 175 students. This year's Commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient, Peter Vigue, is the Chairman and CEO of the Cianbro Companies.

President Laurie Lachance M.B.A.'92 with honorary degree recipients (L) Peter Vigue and (R) Dr. Kenneth Green.

He told students, "Success begins with believing in yourselves, developing a mental toughness that allows you to get up when you're down. It's about being enthusiastic and passionate about everything you do, being positive and not negative."

President Laurie Lachance, at her first Commencement since being inducted as Thomas's President, told students, "The world around us is changing, and we must have the skills to adapt."

Waterville resident Dr. Kenneth Green, former Chief Anesthetist at MaineGeneral Medical Center, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Dr. Green was the first of his family's generation to finish high school and go on to college. He attended medical school at the University of Sydney, specializing in anesthesia. Ken completed his post-graduate work in London, Stockholm, and Boston.

2013 Class Marshals (L to R) Owen Becker, Shelby Gilcott,

 and Nathan Mitchell.

Other speakers during the Commencement weekend included Kelley Shimansky '88,'89 who spoke at Honors Convocation and Jonathan Brown '04 who spoke at the 2013 Class Dinner. Class speakers included Steven Beane '13, Bonnie Buckmore '13, and Nate Marquis M.B.A. '13. This year's Class Marshals were Owen Becker '13, Shelby Gilcott '13, and Nathan Mitchell '13.

Criminal Justice Academy Graduation

On Friday, May 24, the Maine Criminal Justice Academy held its graduation ceremonies of the 24th Basic Law Enforcement Training Program. Forty-two graduates were pinned, including Lauren Kief '13 and Krista Lee '13 of Thomas College. From the beginning notes of the bagpipers to the final benediction, the ceremony was one filled with honor and tradition. Families and friends were in attendance to congratulate the graduates after successfully completing the 18-week training and testing they endured to earn their badges.

Professor Steven Giorgetti (L) and Provost Dr. Thomas Edwards (R) after the ceremonies with Lauren Kief '13.
"You are one of the few who have started this journey and have completed it, that is something to be proud of," stated Provost Dr. Thomas Edwards when speaking with Lauren and her family.
Professor Steven Giorgetti and Provost Dr. Thomas Edwards also congratulated Krista Lee '13.

Krista said, "This has been a great day, now on to moving and preparing to start work on Tuesday!" She will begin her career with the Auburn Police Department next week.

Thanks to Thomas's partnership with the Academy, located in nearby Vassalboro, Criminal Justice majors who attend and graduate are highly marketable in the workforce. Many municipalities pay their new hires to attend the Academy - but students who apply for work with this credential in hand help employers save those costs.
