Borrowing library materials

How do I check out library materials?

To check out materials, please bring them to the service desk, located on the first floor of the library. You must present your Thomas ID upon checkout. Materials from our library will be due back by the last day of class. Due dates for materials requested through interlibrary loan will vary.

Where are the course reserves? How can I check them out?

The course reserves are located behind the service desk. You must present your Thomas ID upon checkout. They may be checked out for two hours. Reserve materials may not leave the library.

How can I request items online?

When you find an item in our library catalog that you wish to request, simply select the Request button at the top of the screen. You will be prompted to enter your name and Thomas ID number, so have your ID card handy. The library staff will pull the material and place it behind the service desk for you.

Can I renew my items online?

You may renew items online through your library account. If your online renewal is unsuccessful, please contact the library.

How do I find materials that aren't in the Thomas library?

You can request materials from other libraries around Maine.

From our library catalog, you may notice that the only library selected is Thomas College. To search other libraries, simply choose ALL MINERVA LOCATIONS from the dropdown menu. When you find the correct material, select the Request button at the top of the screen. You will be prompted to enter your name and Thomas ID number. The material will then be sent to the library's service desk, and you will receive an email once it arrives.

You can also use MaineCat, another interlibrary loan service for the state of Maine. You will also need your Thomas ID number to complete this transaction.

I need a book that is supposed to be in the library, but I can't find it on the shelf. What should I do?

Please notify a librarian or a service desk staff member. The book may be housed in our storage facility. If the book is missing, we may be able to request it for you from another library.

How can I borrow a laptop or iPad?

You may borrow a laptop or iPad from the service desk. You must present your Thomas ID card upon checkout. Please see our library policies for additional information.

Does the library have popular reading material?

Our library houses some books that may be of interest, but the majority of our collection is academic in nature. However, you are welcome to request these books from other libraries and have them sent to Thomas. For more information, please see our Interlibrary Loan page. As a member of the Thomas community, you may also check books out from the Waterville Public Library.

How do I print in the library?

We have a black and white printer and color printer in the library. The library's computers are already connected to the printers. For instructions on connecting your personal computer to our printers, please see our directions to configure your computer.

Can I reserve a group study room?

You can reserve a group study room through your Outlook calendar. The library's study rooms are labeled "Library Group Study #1" and "Library Group Study #2."

Can I connect to library databases when I'm off campus?

You can use our databases from home! One way is to establish a remote destop connection. If you have not used your remote desktop connection, you can learn about it on our Computer Orientation page. (Faculty can find directions on our New Faculty Orientation page.)

If you choose not to connect to the network beforehand, you will be prompted to put in your Thomas username and password after you click on a database link.

How can I find articles on a specific topic?

Thomas community members have access to a wide array of subject-specific databases. To find resources on a specific topic, go to our Databases page and click on your subject area at the top of the page. You will be redirected to a list of databases related to this subject.

What is a peer reviewed article, and how can I find one?

A peer reviewed article is a resource from a scholarly journal. In order to be printed in an academic journal, a paper must go through a rigorous screening process conducted by experts in that particular field.

Many databases allow you to limit your searches to just scholarly journals, filtering out material that is not peer reviewed, such as newspaper and magazine articles. For help navigating this particular feature, please feel free to contact us.

How can I find newspaper articles?

Many of our databases automatically include newspaper articles in their searches. However, ProQuest focuses specifically on newspaper articles. Through this database, we have access to a number of popular newspapers, such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. You can access ProQuest through our Databases page.

How do I find a book review?

Many of our databases include book reviews in their search findings. You may be able to limit your search to just return book reviews.

You may find helpful reviews on the database Novelist. This database is very helpful for reading recommendations as well!

I found an article that is perfect for my paper, but I can't read the full text. How can I get it?

You can request an article through interlibrary loan, where we send an article request to another library. For more information, please see our Interlibrary Loan information page.

I am starting a research project, and I'm completely lost. Can you help me get started?

Whether you have a simple question or an in-depth research project, the library can help! For information about how we can help, please see our Ask-a-Librarian page.

What is plagiarism?
